Evidence-Based Benefits of Infant Massage for Preterm Babies

August 22, 2025

In my work across neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) worldwide, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing something extraordinary: the transformation of preterm infants through Infant Massage and Touch Therapy.

It’s not a miracle. It’s not a trend. It’s backed by science, and it’s time more people knew just how powerful this therapy can be.

Small Bodies, Big Challenges

Preterm infants face an uphill battle from the moment they enter the world. Challenges with thermoregulation, feeding, digestion, immunity, and bonding are common. For parents, it can feel overwhelming, how do you support your baby when they’re fragile, surrounded by machines, and often too sensitive to be held?

This is exactly where Infant Massage, practiced with training and precision, becomes an incredible tool.

What the Research Shows

Multiple peer-reviewed studies and clinical trials have demonstrated that structured Infant Massage interventions for preterm babies can lead to:

  • Faster weight gain
  • Improved digestion and elimination
  • Enhanced vagal activity (supporting parasympathetic nervous system regulation)
  • Improved oxygen saturation
  • Better motor development outcomes
  • Reduced hospital stay durations

A 2016 Cochrane review concluded that massage therapy for preterm infants ā€œmay lead to increased weight gain and earlier discharge from hospital.ā€ That’s not just a feel-good result, it’s a life-changing one for both infants and their families.

A Parent’s Perspective

During one of our training courses in Canada, a young father learned to massage his daughter, born at just 31 weeks.

ā€œI didn’t know I could touch her without hurting her,ā€ he told me. ā€œThe nurses said she gained more weight this week than any other.ā€ – *Mateus, father of baby Clara

These are the kinds of outcomes that reinforce what we already know: touch, when applied with care and knowledge, supports survival.

Why This Matters for Hospitals

NICUs are high-pressure environments with limited time and staffing. However, Touch Therapy protocols can be easily integrated into daily care routines with minimal disruption. When we train providers and educate parents, outcomes improve for everyone, clinically, emotionally, and financially.

Imagine the cost savings from even one fewer week in the NICU. Now multiply that by thousands.

Advocacy Begins with Awareness

If you’re a parent of a preterm baby:
→ Ask your NICU team about infant massage or Touch Therapy support.

If you’re a clinician:
→ Advocate for evidence-based Touch Therapy training in your hospital.

If you’re a policymaker or donor:
→ Support access to certified professionals who can train staff and caregivers.

Infant Massage for preterm babies isn’t a luxury, it’s a low-cost, high-impact intervention supported by data and decades of work in the field.

Let’s make sure it becomes a standard part of neonatal care everywhere.
